Makeshift is hiring a shop hand!
Makeshift Bikes is a small, scrappy bike shop and community space in the Northside. We offer tune ups and general repairs; parts, accessories, and used bike sales. We are working to build local bike community through classes, membership, bike rides, and other fun events. The shop offers sliding scale services when applicable.
After several seasons of largely solo operation by its founder, Makeshift is looking to hire a reliable and enthusiastic shop hand. Ideal candidates are interested in bikes and have a basic knowledge of how they work. They should also possess both retail experience and mechanical aptitude. Keeping the shop running requires a wide variety of tasks and skills which will be shared between current and future staff.
Tasks may include:
Mechanical
- Fixing flats
- Diagnosing repair and maintenance work needed on customer bikes
- Performing repair and maintenance work as able
Administrative
- Customer service in medium volume retail setting, to include:
- Answering the phone
- Greeting visitors
- Conducting sales
- Intaking bicycles for service
- Ticket flow-tracking and prioritizing work
- Shop inventory management
- Assisting with classes and other programs
- Light bookkeeping
- Shop floor organization
- Promotion and marketing as needed
Understanding that no one applicant will possess every skill needed right away, we are hoping that you feel able to take on at least half of the above and are willing to be trained for other responsibilities. Bike repair experience helpful but not required.
The starting rate of the position is $15-17/hr, estimating 20-30 hours/week. Work hours may fluctuate with seasonal business of the shop. This is not a benefits eligible position. The ideal start date is late February.
Send an email to makeshiftbikes@protonmail.com with your interest in the job, and a resume or description of your experience. Looking forward to hearing from you!
